There are multiple reasons why looking away helps you hook up when fishing topwater, including speed changes and leaving time between the bite and setting the hook.

    Had this happen to me last year fishing from the bank. Was Fishing a frog in some pads and noticed a bullfrog by my foot. Moved my foot and the frog jumped in the water. Almost simultaneously with the splash of the frog, A bass hits my lure. Didn't know I one till I felt it fighting on my line.
