Daniel W. Galhardo, founder of Tenkara USA and Masaki Nakano go tenkara fly-fishing in the Sierra Nevada. Tenkara is the traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing, ideal for mountain streams. In tenkara one uses only a rod, line and fly, no reel is needed for stream fishing. Originally it was practiced by commercial/professional fishermen in the mountain streams of Japan, who used to catch fish for a living.

This style of fishing has been around at least 200 years in Japan. It's only 'new' in the US.

What does it matter to anyone how another person decides to fish? Spinning, fly fishing, Tenkara, cane pole, what does it matter?? This reminds me of an old country song by Hank Williams Junior…."If you mind your own business you won't be minding mine, and if you mind your own business, you'll be busy all the time."

You wouldn't expect people who couldn't invent the knife and fork to think of using a reel.

I like this way to catch bluegills, and shoreline shallow largemouth Bass. Also flounder in shallow water.
I use a standard flyrod and a small stripping basket.
Like that guy interviewed, I can do this all day.

I use the same thing for albacore tuna, we call it jack poling. I know guys in Oklahoma that do the same, only with cane poles.

Nothing against Tenkara but saying you couldn’t make that cast with a 7 foot fly rod is BS

Japanese Yamame trout is very sensitive against sound and shadow, very quick movement, different family group from rainbow trout. The old day people knew Japanese Yamame trout raise for bugs. Greetings from Japan.

All I seem to be reading on here is that reels are better than no reels. Let them market there product and let people feel good about how they want to fish. Don't be the jerk out on the water judging the guy or girl next to you.

A bold step back to Medieval times, long before those clunky reels and stuff were invented.

i feel like youd be in trouble if you were hooked up into a big fish with this rod, no drag? your done if the fish decides to take off.

No offense guys but"tenkara" really? I was tenkara fishing years ago and didn't even know it. On the Green in Wyoming-it was when i stepped on my Orvis reel and broke it. Heck I even caught a couple too.
